Now that we're into 2012, the numbers for 2011 are coming in.
The latest statistic is that there were 42 million mainland visitors to Hong Kong last year, of them 14.8 million were day-trippers, up 30 percent from 2010. This figure for the first time outnumbers those who stay overnight.
Day-trippers are estimated to have spent HK$34 billion in the city last year.
That's a lot of designer label clothes, shoes and handbags, milk powder, cosmetics and electronics.
