Paper Messages

These are pictures of all the ads in Apple Daily today. Quite a selection

Four days after Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai Chee-ying was arrested, people are still buying the paper, but not necessarily for the articles, but the advertisements.

On Monday when the police came to get Lai at his home, there was only one ad in the paper.

Today there were 21 advertisements, many of them full page ads from small businesses who are hinting they are part of the "yellow economy".

A restaurant ad on the right proudly says its siu mai are yellow
One restaurant even boasted their siu mai, or steamed pork and shrimp dumplings were yellow... well they are in a yellow wrapper...

An intrepid reporter even checked out the shop and was impressed to find they had different kinds of siu mai, like pork and fish, and you can add fish balls to your order.

One ad thanked "Uncle Lai", or "Support, even if you print blank pages!", while one ad said, "Money can buy sports shoes, but can't buy democracy and freedom," sponsored by a website selling domain names of all things.

So while Next Digital stock may have tanked today to close at HK$0.38, supporters still have ways to pitch in to the paper, and get a lot of eye balls.
