| Die wei can be applied to many different situations |
I recently came across this Chinese word die(1) wei(4) 爹味, which is literally "daddy flavour" or slang for "mansplaining".
Many young people use this term now to describe anyone -- male or female -- who claim unwarranted authority and give unsolicited advice.
According to Lu Pin, a feminist activist, the term's popularity shows growing resistance from young people -- mostly women -- to patriarchal culture.
But she adds the term is mostly used online, as hierarchy in reality is not going to change anytime soon.
What a great word that can be applied in so many situations!
