Picture of the Day: Baumstriezel

For 4 euros, here is a portion of baumstriezel or chimney cake
We've been eating a lot of German fare -- sausages, pork knuckle and sauerkraut. Oh yes and cold cuts, rye bread and now white asparagus is in season.

Before we came a must-try was curry wurst which is advertised with flames underneath the sausage, but really it's hardly spicy at all. It's basically a boiled sausage with a kind of ketchup with curry powder sprinkled on top.

We were beginning to wonder if this was the height of German cuisine but we found something else to try.

Yesterday afternoon we managed to find Dresden's oldest square where there is an open market with stalls selling all kinds of things from soaps to honey, jewellery and even brooms. Oh yes more bratwurst.

However, we stumbled upon this curious pastry called baumstriezel or chimney cake, wrapped around a thick pole. It cost 4 euros ($4.47) and it's a wonderful fluffy pastry flavoured with apple and cinnamon with lots of sugar sprinkled on top. It's literally coiled around the pole, so you need to break off piece of it to eat it.

And with temperatures down to 6 degrees Celsius, this warm pastry was the perfect way to enjoy the afternoon.
